Wrestle-Dirt Dirt Sheet (September 11th, 2012)

Last night’s scary incident involving Jerry “The King” Lawler’s heart attack during the live broadcast of Monday Night Raw in Montreal, Quebec, Canada saw an outpouring of support across the Internet, with various woman involved in wrestling taking to Twitter to wish the WWE Hall Of Famer all the best. AJ Lee, Vickie Guerrero, Velvet Sky (who worked on shows with Lawler in Aruba at the weekend) and former wife Stacy Carter all expressed their sentiments.

Lawler’s current girlfriend Lauryn McBride took to her Facebook to let everyone know the situation:
"Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. It has been confirmed that Jerry did have a heart attack…he is in stable condition and breathing on his own & heart is stable. I’m getting on the first flight out of here to be with him & will keep everyone posted. He is a strong man and we will get him back at his best as soon as I can get him home! I love you so so much baby!!"

Montreal wrestling journalist Pat Laprade recounted to SLAM! Wrestling:

"Lawler grabbed his arm, collapsed and his face was blueish. Something like 7-8 people rushed to over to him, lifted him backstage. The medics were clearly told by the production to go backstage as they didn’t want anything to happen in front of the fans.
Right after, people were running everywhere, not seeming to know what to do exactly. Cole looked like he saw a ghost and seemed very shaken."

Carter also informed everyone that her ex-husband had received a stent and balloon in his heart valve (which helps to increase blood flow) after being rushed from the Bell Centre, and we also understand that he is having heart surgery today – his condition is described as stable. One person in the crowd at last night’s show knows more than most about the capable hands that Lawler is now in, as she was once a patient undergoing a procedure on her own heart: former nCw Femmes Fatales International Champion, LuFisto.

The 32-year old suffered a stroke in the spring of 2010 due to an undiagnosed heart problem, which when she had surgery to correct it last July, turned out to be a 20mm hole – four times larger than the doctors had diagnosed. Naturally, she was keen to get it sorted out, especially since her grandmother, aunt and father had all suffered from cardiac issues in their lives. A catheter was inserted into her body and a device was placed over the hole which will cause the tissue to repair itself and close the gap over the next 6-12 months. More than a year on, LuFisto says she has so much more energy, is in better shape than ever before, and has taken to bodybuilding to improve her fitness and physique. She knows what heart doctors in Montreal are like, and tweeted as such earlier today:
"Montreal has the best heart surgeons in the world. Mr. Lawler is in really good hands. I know. I was a patient. #PrayforLawler"
If there is any hope, LuFisto is the prime example of how heart issues can be sorted out, especially if you’re in the hands of medical professionals in Montreal. We wish Jerry all the best and hope the surgeons do as great a job as they did with the Super Hardcore Anime.

After writing on Kaitlyn and talking about how she ended up in the Divas Title match at Night Of Champions against Layla seemingly by accident, a thought popped up into my head.
Is she the luckiest Diva ever?

After all, she was in the right place at the right time to take Aloisia’s place on season 3 of NXT, and was also fortunate to benefit from Eve Torres reportedly not managing to land on the apron after being clotheslined over the top in the battle royale last month. However, her luck may not have ended there, as she may be the one to end the dismal reign of Layla as Divas Champion.

I’ve mentioned before that Layla’s run with the belt has been pretty disappointing, and on Raw, Michael Cole pointed out how she has held the belt since April, which is something which is seldom pointed out unless the champion is getting ready to drop it. With the pay-per-view this weekend, a fresh challenger and that challenger having potential issues with other women like Natalya and Eve Torres. What is going on around her at the moment is interesting, and that’s more than can be said for Layla, whose main issue is with Eve, and that can be transferred to whoever has the belt. A heel turn may also be beneficial to the former Miami Heat cheerleader, who can use the bitchy promos which saw her get so much of the spotlight in Lay-Cool, and means she can eliminate the silly dancing and that triple jump crossbody from the second rope, where time just seems to stop while she does it.

For that reason, don’t be surprised if Kaitlyn is the Divas Champion by the end of Sunday. And if such a thing happens, I wouldn’t complain. She’s toiled for long enough, had a push over the summer, been involved in feuds with Natalya, as well as with Torres when the two squabbled over who would be SmackDown GM Booker T’s assistant.

If bookmakers took bets on wrestling, I wouldn’t be afraid of putting a couple of golden nuggets down on a Kaitlyn victory, and wouldn’t be upset if it actually happened.

TNA barely dedicated any time to selling the Knockouts Title match in the run-up to No Surrender. After Tara beat champion Miss Tessmacher in a non-title match last month, the two didn’t interact again until they got into the ring against each other at the pay-per-view. At least WWE is doing something to sell the Divas Title match at Night Of Champions, even if it is the first PPV in an age where they’ve actually done so.

As mentioned above, Kaitlyn’s been battling Natalya and Torres while also making a run for the belt, while Layla’s been having matches elsewhere. The number of multiple storylines means that there is less of a conveyor belt feeling to the title matches, with one challenger dispatched and other rocking up, which seems to be the case for TNA recently. Gail Kim defeated one challenger after another until Tessmacher took the belt, then lost to Madison Rayne who was involved in a storyline with ref Earl Hebner which seems to have merely been a foil to introduce Taryn Terrell as a referee, and left Rayne with a bit part in the whole shebang. Meanwhile, ODB hasn’t wrestled since April, even though she holds one half of the Knockouts Tag Team Titles.
There is no reason why TNA can’t have one storyline thread going on while another match takes place on the same show. Alternatively, why not have a match on Xplosion – which only airs internationally and not in the US, though that could be solved by sticking it on YouTube – and show highlights on Impact, which would only take 30 seconds but keep viewers up to date with what’s going on with all the Knockouts, as well as keeping them busy?

Maybe it’s a money thing. After all, many of TNA’s wrestlers are on pay-per-appearance deal, so the fewer names being flown in every week means savings to the bottom line, but that doesn’t explain why Tessmacher’s great promo summing up the build to her No Surrender match and why it mattered didn’t air on Impact instead of going on the PPV where only viewers who had already paid for the show got to watch it. She delivered it so well that it may have garnered a few buys, and every buy counts.

Recently, TNA has invested more time and attention in creating episodic storylines like with the Bound For Glory series, Aces and Eights and the AJ Styles/Claire Lynch tale – the latter of which was admittedly terrible, but at least it was given a chance before it was brought to an end instead of just aborted. If only the same sort of attention was given to the Knockouts, the division wouldn’t feel so flat and wouldn’t see so many names choosing to depart.

The best of the rest

WWE

Eve Torres met Sarah Palin during the filming of Stars Earn Stripes, describing her as “sweet”, but also points out that they didn’t discuss politics. WWE finally mentioned the show on Raw too, as now that it’s finished, it’s not clashing with their own programme on Monday nights… Layla beat Natalya on WWE Superstars last week. The match featured less sound sweetening than normal. Then they were on opposite teams on Raw last night when Layla, Eve Torres and Kaitlyn beat Alicia Fox, Natalya & Beth Phoenix. Eve tagged herself in to get the pinfall and then celebrated with her confused partners, who know (along with us) that her friendliness is disingenuous. Meanwhile, I’ve no idea how Fox became a heel again, not that it really matters.

TNA

Tara appeared on Chicago’s The Late Live Show recently, delivering a standing moonsault to one of the hosts after she was asked if wrestling was fake… Winter has parted ways with TNA after her contract was not renewed. She last wrestled on TV back in April. All in all, her character and the storyline with Angelina Love was a total flop, with her not getting over and it bringing down Love as part of the deal. It’s been pretty apparent that she was on her way out after touring the UK in July and being part of the Bombshell Ladies Of Wrestling iPPV on October 11… Mickie James worked heel against Miss Tessmacher at TNA house shows last week – one of which took place at the same time as the Impact TV show… Meanwhile, Tessmacher retained the Knockouts Championship over Tara at No Surrender in a pretty unspectacular match, but Tara left visibly frustrated at her defeat, so a rematch may be on the cards for Bound For Glory.

North America

Maria Kanellis will be at CHIKARA’s King Of Trios as part of Team Ring Of Honor alongside her beau Mike Bennett… December defeated Taeler Hendrix at the OVW tapings last Wednesday. Hendrix was distracted by Heidi Lovelace tending to her boyfriend Dylan Bostic’s injured shoulder with an ice pack… SHIMMER’s show as part of WrestleCon in March was one of the first shows in the weekend to sell out. 100 tickets were gone in 5 hours… Saturyne has been announced as one of the participants in Women Superstars Uncensored’s Uncensored Opportunity match on October 13. Meanwhile, Annie Social and Kimber Lee are petitioning for their match against Tag Team Champions Sassy Stephie and Allysin Kay to be a title match… Nicole Matthews has been added to the AAW show taking place the night before the SHIMMER tapings next month, while Tomoka Nakagawa has been announced for SHIMMER, as has Kana… Ivelisse Velez (TAFKA Sofia Cortez) has hinted that she may return to MMA training… Sienna DuVall won the Battling Bombshells Championship from La Rosa Negra on Saturday night… In defeating Mathieu St-Jacques at NSPW on Saturday night, LuFisto suffered a mild concussion… Tammy Sytch and Cherry Bomb both assumed a managing role at the CZW iPPV on Saturday… Transgender wrestler Amanda won the 2012 Lunacy Cup in a battle royale at Vendetta Pro Wrestling at the weekend.

Japan

MsChif will return to Japan for the first time in 6 years when she wrestles of the October 7 Joshi4Hope show. Her only other appearance there saw her Kyoko Kimura and fall to Yoshiko Tamura. Ayumi Kurihara & Mika Iida v Leon & Manami Katsu has also been announced… An update from last week’s Roundup where we discussed the Ice Ribbon departures – Dorami Nagano has not wrestled since June because she has quit the biz… Emi Sakura’s Gatoh Move promotion held its first card on Thursday following a number of exhibition matches.

Europe

Pro Wrestling: EVE has hinted that a new tag team will debut at its next show on November 10, and has also announced that Erin Angel is returning… Nikki Storm and Sara Marie Taylor will compete in a cage match in W3L on September 21. The pair fought in a Ladder Match earlier this year, with Storm retaining the Women’s Championship… Congratulations to Queen Maya, who got married at the weekend… Nikki Storm (under her Ms Nicola Storm guise) will take on Fiona Fraser at ICW: Fierce Females at the end of the month… Kay Lee Ray and Carmel Jacob face Mickie James at Pro Wrestling Elite in Scotland this weekend… Announced less than an hour ago: SHIMMER Champion Sweet Saraya will face Pro Wrestling: EVE Champion Alpha Female in the main event of the UKWW/WAWW show on October 6th in Wakefield. Both are competing to determine who is the rightful UKWW Champion.

Mexico

CMLL is still advertising Dark Angel as being on shows, then replacing her. The same thing happened on Friday night in Mexico City, where she was replaced by Estrellita… CMLL World Women’s Champion Marcela won the first ever IWS Mexico Women’s Cup on Sunday… Amapola will also challenge Marcela for the title next week.

Australia & New Zealand

Nikita Naridian – who has recently returned from training with Lance Storm in Canada – will be heading to Mexico soon to try out for AAA. She’s thanked Teddy Hart and Konnan for the opportunity… Niki Nitro fell to Portia Perez in LCW in Canada on Thursday… Evie’s first defence of the Impact Pro Wrestling Women’s Championship will be on September 29 against Britenay, who was the one who wasn’t pinned in the three-way title match last month between she, Evie & Megan-Kate.
